Treatment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

The core features of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) are:

1. avoidances of objects or situations which trigger obsessions;

2. compulsive behaviours and / or thought rituals; and

3. obsession thoughts.

Themes of obsession are of contamination, physical violence to self or others, death, accidental harm, socially unacceptable behaviour, unacceptable sexual acts, blasphemous thoughts, orderliness or nonsensical (images, phrases, words etc.)

Since the 1950s we can say that OCD is very treatable and over the years we have continued to advance the treatment protocols. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is the treatment of choice for OCD, offering practical evidence based solutions.  When recommending treatment options reputable and respected organisaions only recommend medication thepray and/or CBT.  We are a CBT service but above this we recommend evidence based treatment so if you would like to concider medication we can organise this.  For the psychological approaches, CBT usually requires 16 sessions to overcome OCD. We have accredited CBT therapists that can help you overcome OCD in our London Service
